Diary entry thirty two

bit of a rant here, it's about why I don't want to do philosophy for degree
anymore, so if you want info on China/the academy it might be good to skip
it. But this might be good for some people to hear anyway, because if you
study martial arts anywhere, people will talk about philosophy over and over
and over.

There are two things that I hate people talking about. Philosophy and
personality. And then connecting the two, because they are pretty much
interrelated.

People talk about philosophy subtly all of the time and that's alright as
long as it doesn't go too far, it's just when people go so far as to use the
idea of philosophy to identify themselves, and to create an image of
themselves to others. That's one thing that you might notice going to China
and studying martial arts with other Laowai, is that people talk pointlessly
about philosophy.

Why?

I want to be a martial artist. I do NOT want to be Bruce Lee. Leave me alone
with this crappy fourteen year old theories that EVERYBODY IN THE UNIVERSE
has thought of, but most people have the decency to not let out their
mouths.
The inherent smugness of it all, the cheesy thoughtful delivery, just
everything about it makes me want to throw up. Blood.
As soon as you call philosophy, philosophy it looses all meaning to me. I
just instantly hate you and your pretensions ways. The philosophy that really
matters (and often doesn't) is the stuff thought up inadvertadely by
sociologists, because they find a way to actually use it in the real world.

And personality. SUCKS. It's completely made up. Your personality should be,
a persons opinion of you based on your natural reactions, but how many
people react naturally? As long as you think about your own personality you
can't react naturally, you have no personality.

Somebody asked a friend of mine what kind of personality he had. He replied
'you tell me'. That is how it should be. I can imagine people using this as
a diving board into a pool of conceit. 'Well, I'm a shy person, a happy
person, a thoughtful person, an amazing person, one of the greatest people
in the world.'

"I'm THIS kind of person."
Gee, thanks. If it was as easy as telling people what kind of person you
were, why do I have my own opinion of you? Stop relying on your own opinion
of yourself and forcing it onto me! If you want to be a good person, be a
good person and I'll work it out, don't tell me that you're a good person
because I won't believe you!

And people talk endlessly about philosophy still! Because they think that it
makes them seem thoughtful and quiet.

You know what it's called it when people decide what kind of personality to
have? HYPOCRISY.

Here are some facts:
-EVERYBODY is philosophical, as long as you're alive you think about it. So
don't declare yourself philosophical over others.
-Facts are better than philosophies.
-If you spend so long designing yourself nobody will take you seriously -If you want to be thought of as thoughtful, stop speaking and start
thinking.

I know the inherent ironies in this rant. And I know that I've used the word
'natural', in describing people, when really I should have said
'spontaneous' or something. I know that in snapping at people, I too could
be described as using philosophy and being self righteous enough to force
it.

But, hey, I don't care.

BRING ON THE FASCISTS!
